Huntsman Advanced Materials has published the technical data sheet (TDS) for Araldite 2015 structural adhesive, providing a detailed performance reference for the engineering bonding sector. The product is a two-component, room-temperature curing paste adhesive that is thixotropic and non-sagging up to 0.394 in (10 mm) thickness, making it particularly suitable for bonding SMC (sheet molding compound) and GRP (glass-reinforced plastic).

Araldite 2015 consists of Components A and B, both neutral pastes with a density of approximately 1.4 g/cm³, and the mixed system remains thixotropic. Pot life at 25°C for a 100 g mass is approximately 30 to 40 minutes, offering a practical working window. The mix ratio is 100:100 by weight and 100:100 by volume, simplifying handling.

In terms of mechanical performance, the TDS provides lap shear data based on aluminum alloy lap joints. Among sand-blasted metal-to-metal joints, brass achieved the highest average lap shear strength at 3,075 psi, followed by copper at 2,872 psi, steel 37/11 at 2,886 psi, stainless steel V4A at 2,640 psi, aluminum at 2,408 psi, and galvanized steel at 1,566 psi. For plastic-to-plastic joints prepared by light abrasion and alcohol degreasing, CFRP joints reached 2,074 psi, GRP 1,334 psi, and SMC 1,015 psi. The TDS also reports a roller peel strength of 23 pli (4.0 N/mm) and a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 153°F (67°C) by DSC and 189°F (87°C) by shear modulus.

Regarding environmental resistance, the TDS lists lap shear strength after 30 and 60 days of immersion in media at 23°C. After 60 days, strength was 3,002 psi in lubricating oil, 2,509 psi in gasoline, 2,045 psi in xylene, 2,002 psi in IMS, 1,784 psi in ethyl acetate, and 827 psi in 10% acetic acid. After 90 days of tropical weather exposure, strength was 2,263 psi; after 90 days of heat aging at 158°F, it was 3,292 psi. Thermal cycling (-30°C to +70°C, 25 cycles) yielded a strength of 3,002 psi.

Cure time references are also provided: 12 hours to reach lap shear strength above 145 psi at 50°F, 7.5 hours at 73°F, 4 hours at 104°F, and 1 hour at 140°F; to exceed 1,450 psi, 21 hours at 73°F, 13 hours at 104°F, 6 hours at 140°F, and 2 hours at 212°F are required.

On application, the TDS emphasizes that joint strength and durability depend on proper surface pretreatment. Surfaces should be cleaned at minimum with a good degreasing agent such as acetone or isopropanol (for plastics); low-grade alcohol, gasoline, or paint thinners should never be used. Mechanical abrading or chemical etching ("pickling") should be followed by a second degreasing treatment. An adhesive layer of 0.002 to 0.004 in (0.05 to 0.10 mm) normally imparts the greatest lap shear strength. The product is available in cartridges incorporating mixers and can be applied as ready-to-use adhesive with the aid of tools recommended by Huntsman Advanced Materials.

For storage, the product should be kept in a dry place in original sealed containers at temperatures between 2°C and 40°C (36°F and 104°F), with a shelf life of 3 years from the date of manufacture, and should not be exposed to direct sunlight. If stored below 60°F, the adhesive should be brought to 60°F–77°F and conditioned at this temperature for some time prior to use.
