3M, formerly known as the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, was founded in 1902 and is a globally recognized diversified technology and innovation leader. Renowned for its exceptional innovative capabilities and product diversity, 3M has developed over 60,000 high-quality products spanning numerous sectors—from consumer goods to healthcare, transportation, construction, and electronic communications. 3M China Limited was established in 1984 as the country’s first wholly foreign-owned enterprise. Today, its operations in China include 12 companies, 11 manufacturing facilities, 27 offices and R&D centers, and a workforce of more than 8,200 employees. 3M’s mission is to be the most innovative enterprise, delivering outstanding quality, value, and service to meet the needs of customers worldwide.
Among 3M’s extensive product portfolio, the DP Series Structural Adhesives stand out for their superior performance and reliability. Two notable products, the DP760 and DP8005, are widely used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics manufacturing, and industrial equipment.
DP760 is a non-sag, rigid, two-component room-temperature curing adhesive specifically designed for high-temperature applications. Its key features include:
High-Temperature Resistance: Maintains stable bond strength under high-temperature conditions, making it suitable for components consistently exposed to heat, such as automotive engine parts, exhaust systems, and aerospace assemblies.
Non-Sag Properties: Does not run or drip when applied on vertical or overhead surfaces, ensuring uniform adhesive distribution, minimizing waste, and improving application efficiency.
Room-Temperature Curing: Cures naturally at room temperature without the need for heat or pressure equipment, simplifying the bonding process. Full curing typically takes 24 hours at 22°C, though this can be accelerated to 60–80 minutes with heating at 60°C–65°C.
High-Strength Bonding: Offers shear strength up to 50 MPa and is suitable for structural bonding of diverse materials including metals, plastics, ceramics, glass, and wood.
Proper use of DP760 requires strict adherence to surface preparation (cleaning bonding surfaces), mixing ratio (1:1 for two components), and safety protocols (use of protective equipment). Its applications include automotive part assembly, aircraft fuselage structures, heat sink attachment in electronics, and industrial pipeline repairs.
DP8005 is a two-component acrylic-based adhesive specifically formulated for bonding low-surface-energy plastics—such as polypropylene, polyethylene, and thermoplastic elastomers—without requiring extensive surface treatment. Its highlights include:
Minimal Surface Preparation: Only a wipe with isopropyl alcohol is needed to remove contaminants for a strong bond, eliminating steps like chemical etching or plasma treatment.
Versatile Bonding Capability: Compatible with metals, ceramics, wood, and most plastics, with exceptional performance on polyolefins. It delivers a shear strength of 2,000 psi (approx. 13.8 MPa).
Controlled Dispensing and Fast Cure: Its medium viscosity allows precise application. Working time is 3 minutes at 22°C, handling strength is achieved in 3 hours, and full curing occurs within 24 hours.
Chemical Resistance and Eco-Friendliness: Resistant to water, chemicals, and corrosion. Its low-odor formulation meets environmental standards and is certified by NSF and FDA.
DP8005 is widely used in appliance manufacturing (bonding plastics to metals), sports equipment repair, automotive interior assembly, and electronics packaging. It is supplied in a 490 mL Duo-Pak cartridge and requires a 3M dispensing gun for application.
The DP Series embodies 3M’s core innovative vision:
Integration of Technology: DP760 utilizes a polyurethane system, while DP8005 is based on acrylic chemistry. Both leverage 3M’s 42 core technology platforms to ensure excellence in bond strength, durability, and environmental adaptability.
Replacement of Traditional Methods: These adhesives can replace screws, rivets, or welding, reducing structural weight, enhancing design flexibility, and lowering production costs.
Sustainability: 3M products comply with environmental regulations. For instance, DP8005’s low-odor formulation helps reduce environmental impact during production.
The 3M DP Series Structural Adhesives represent a benchmark in industrial bonding technology. With DP760 addressing high-temperature resistance and DP8005 tailored for low-surface-energy materials, both provide efficient and reliable solutions. Backed by 3M’s century-long legacy of innovation and global R&D support, these products continue to drive progress across the automotive, aerospace, electronics, and manufacturing sectors. Moving forward, 3M remains committed to creating greater value for customers worldwide under the guiding principle: “Science Applied to Life."
