Electrolube Launches CPL Clear Protective Lacquer: A Cost-Effective, High-Gloss Conformal Coating for PCB and Metal Protection

A global leader in electro-chemical solutions for the electronics industry, has highlighted the capabilities of its CPL Clear Protective Lacquer (CPL), a general-purpose conformal coating designed to provide robust environmental protection for printed circuit boards (PCBs) and ferrous metals.

As electronic devices are increasingly deployed in humid, corrosive, or dusty environments—ranging from industrial control cabinets to automotive interior electronics—the demand for reliable, cost-effective board protection continues to grow. CPL is formulated to meet this need, offering a high-quality, high-gloss finish that not only defends against moisture and environmental attack but also delivers an excellent cosmetic appearance for over-coating applications.

Key Properties and Performance
Solids content: 21%
Viscosity (20°C): approx. 25 mPa·s
Touch-dry time: 15–20 minutes
Full cure (20°C): 24 hours
Dried coating: Colourless, high-gloss finish
Temperature range: -50°C to +100°C
Dielectric strength: 45 kV/mm
Surface insulation resistance: 1*10¹² Ω
Dielectric constant: 3.5
Flammability standards: UL94 HB
Thermal cycling tests: Passes per MIL-I-46058C

A practical advantage of CPL is its reworkability: the cured coating can be removed using Electrolube ULS solvent, allowing for repair or modification of PCBs without damage to the substrate—an important feature for prototyping, maintenance, and low-to-medium volume production.

Application Versatility

CPL can be applied by spraying (manual or selective equipment), dipping, or brushing, giving manufacturers flexibility across different production scales. For spray application, a pressure of 274–413 kPa (40–60 psi) is typical, and the material requires no thinning at room temperature. In dip coating, viscosity should be maintained between 20–30 mPa·s using Electrolube DCT thinners as solvent evaporates.

The product is well-suited for:

PCB protection in consumer and industrial electronics, where humidity resistance and a neat appearance are required;

Over-coating applications, such as branding or decorative finishes on electronic modules, thanks to its clear, high-gloss film;

Corrosion protection of ferrous metal parts, including transformer cores, relay casings, and other components exposed to mild corrosive environments;

Prototyping and repair workshops, where the ability to rework the coating simplifies iterative design and fault finding.

Usage Considerations

CPL is a solvent-based coating with a VOC content of 79% and a flash point of 12°C; adequate extraction and standard solvent-handling precautions are required. Application should be carried out at temperatures above 16°C and relative humidity below 75%. Substrates must be thoroughly cleaned—particularly removing flux residues—to ensure proper adhesion and to prevent potential corrosion under the coating.

Availability

CPL is RoHS compliant (2015/863/EU) and available in multiple pack sizes, including 200 ml aerosol (CPL200H, shelf life 36 months) and 5 litre bulk (CPL05L, shelf life 48 months). Compatible thinners (DCT) and removal solvent (ULS) are also available from Electrolube’s product range.
