Latest company news about Huntsman Advanced Materials’ Prefilled Epoxy Casting System Targets Demanding Electrical Insulation Applications

Araldite® CW 1302 Resin with Aradur® HY 1300 Hardener is a prefilled casting resin system optimized for processing and curing at room temperature or slightly elevated temperatures to yield excellent thermal endurance. The system is recommended for the manufacture of transformers, filters, capacitors and electrical devices used in potentially explosive environments, and can be processed by casting or vacuum casting.

Key features include good thermal conductivity, low water absorption, excellent thermal endurance, UL 94 V0 flammability for 3.0 mm thick plaques, UL 1446 System Temperature Class 180 (H), and railway certification EN 45545-2 R22 HL2 / R23 HL3. The datasheet lists a temperature index of 181°C (IEC 60216), glass transition temperature by DSC of 74–76°C, thermal conductivity of 0.87–0.89 W/mK, and Shore D hardness of 88.

For processing, Araldite CW 1302 Resin contains fillers that tend to settle, so the complete container contents must be carefully homogenized before use. The highly filled component should preferably be heated to 40–50°C in its original container to facilitate stirring and handling before adding the hardener. After thorough mixing, the mixed material should be degassed under a 5–10 mbar vacuum to yield quality casting. The mixed viscosity at 40°C is 3,450–3,550 mPa·s; gel time is 79–81 minutes at 25°C, 50–75 minutes at 40°C and 25–35 minutes at 60°C; pot life at 40°C to reach 15,000 mPa·s is 36–38 minutes. The suggested curing process is 24 hours at room temperature (about 25°C) plus 6 hours at 60°C to yield parts with low shrinkage and best surface aspect; the minimum curing condition can be 48 hours at 25°C.

For electrical properties, dielectric strength for a 2 mm thick plate is 26–28 kV/mm, dielectric constant at 50 Hz and 25°C is 4.9, dissipation factor is 5.3%, tracking resistance CTI is greater than 600, and volume resistivity is 1×10¹⁴ Ωcm. For flammability and smoke performance, UL 94 rating is V0 at 3.0 mm thickness and HB at 1.5 mm thickness; oxygen index LOI is 36.1%, smoke density Ds maximum is 238, and smoke toxicity CIT is 0.81. Water absorption is 0.03–0.05% by weight after 1 day at 23°C and 0.21–0.23% after 30 minutes at 100°C.

For storage, Araldite CW 1302 Resin should be stored in a dry place in its sealed original container at 2–40°C, with a shelf life of 1.5 years from the date of manufacture. Aradur HY 1300 Hardener is sensitive to moisture; partially used containers should be closed immediately after use, and the use of a desiccant venting device is highly recommended. It should be stored in a dry place in its sealed original container at 2–40°C, with a shelf life of 3 years from the date of manufacture. Huntsman Advanced Materials advises users to review the latest Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and technical datasheet before use.
