آخرین مورد شرکت Real-World Application Case: Industrial Filter End Cap Bonding — ARALDITE 2014-2 Structural Adhesive Solution

Case Background

A manufacturer of industrial filtration equipment in South China faced bonding challenges between aluminum end caps and GRP filter media in mass production. The bonding was required to:

  • Withstand long-term operating temperatures of 120–140°C

  • Resist long-term immersion in hydraulic oil

  • Maintain non-sagging performance during vertical application

  • Meet drinking water contact safety certification (KIWA approved)

Application Process

Step 1: Surface Pretreatment

Thoroughly clean the aluminum end cap and GRP filter media bonding surfaces with acetone or alcohol to remove all traces of oil, grease and dirt. Never use low-grade alcohol, gasoline or paint thinners

Step 2: Mixing

Mix accurately by weight at a ratio of 100 parts resin : 50 parts hardener until uniform in color.

Step 3: Adhesive Application

Apply the mixed adhesive to the pretreated and dry end cap surface. A layer thickness of 0.05–0.10mm will normally impart the greatest lap shear strength.

Step 4: Curing

Cure at 23°C room temperature for approximately 8 hours to reach handling strength; for accelerated curing, heat at 40°C for 16 hours or 80°C for 1 hour

Why 2014-2 is the Right Answer:

1.Highest temperature resistance of 140°C — At 120–140°C operating conditions, 2011 (90°C) and 2012 (70°C) would soften and fail; 2015-1 (100°C) is also insufficient; only 2014-2 and 2019 reach 140°C.

2.110-minute pot life — Longer than 2015-1 (45–60 minutes), allowing production line workers to complete precise alignment and assembly; much more generous than 2012 (only 6 minutes).

3.Thixotropic non-sagging — Maintains position at up to 5mm thickness, ideal for vertical end cap bonding.

4.KIWA approved — Suitable for drinking water contact, meeting the hygiene and safety requirements for filtration equipment.

5.Low shrinkage — Ensures dimensional accuracy and tight tolerances.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between ARALDITE® 2014-2 and 2014-3?

A: ARALDITE® 2014-3 is the reformulated version of 2014-2, with consistent performance and processing characteristics. Both share the same 100:50 mix ratio by weight and dark grey color. Choose based on local availability.

Q2: What materials can 2014-2 bond?

A: 2014-2 offers excellent adhesion to a wide range of substrates including: aluminum, steel, copper, ceramics, carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), glass-reinforced plastic (GRP), sheet molding compound (SMC), polyamide, and wood. Particularly suitable for dissimilar material bonding between metals and composites.

Q3: Is 2014-2 safe? What precautions should be taken?

A: Uncured 2014-2 resin may cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and serious eye damage. Wear nitrile or neoprene rubber gloves and safety goggles during handling. Maintain adequate ventilation in the work area. In case of skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and warm water; in case of eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention. Wash hands thoroughly at the end of each work perio

Q4: How should 2014-2 be stored? What is the shelf life?

A: 2014-2 components A and B must be stored at room temperature (2–40°C) in sealed containers. Avoid contact with strong acids, strong bases, and strong oxidizing agents. The expiry date is indicated on the product label.

Q5: What percentage of bonding needs does the ARALDITE® 2000 Core Range cover?

A: The ARALDITE® 2000 Adhesive Core Range covers up to 80% of everyday bonding needs. The range includes multiple high-performance products across epoxy, acrylic, and polyurethane technologies, suitable for metals, composites, thermosets, thermoplastics, and various other substrates. For more specific tasks, Huntsman offers 200+ other specialty adhesives.

Q6: How is the chemical resistance of 2014-2?

A: 2014-2 offers excellent chemical resistance with outstanding tolerance to water, a wide variety of chemicals, and hydraulic oils. Testing has confirmed that lap shear strength is well maintained after 30, 60, and 90 days of immersion in water, salt water, motor oil, gasoline, ethanol, and various other media.
