High-Performance Heat Cure Bonding for Diverse Elastomers to Metal: LORD Chemlok 6150GB Adhesive

In modern industrial manufacturing, firmly bonding various rubber elastomers (such as NR, NBR, EPDM, etc.) to metal frameworks via molding and vulcanization is a core process for producing dampers, seals, and composite parts. To meet the higher demands in bond strength, process adaptability, and environmental performance, LORD Corporation has introduced Chemlok 6150GB, a one-coat heat cure adhesive that provides a proven solution for reliable bonding of multiple elastomers to metal, plastic, and fabric substrates.

Product Overview

Chemlok 6150GB is a black liquid one-coat adhesive with a xylene-based solvent system, composed of polymers, organic compounds, and mineral fillers dissolved or dispersed in an organic solvent. It is designed for heat cure bonding of unvulcanized elastomers to various metals (carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper alloys, etc.), as well as some plastics and fabric substrates. Compatible elastomers include Natural Rubber (NR), Polyisoprene (IR), Styrene-butadiene (SBR), Polybutadiene (BR), Polychloroprene (CR), Nitrile (NBR), Butyl (IIR), EPDM, Polyepichlorohydrin (ECO), among others. The product contains no chlorinated solvents or lead salts, complies with ROHS and REACH environmental regulations, and typically achieves "Rubber Failure" in applications, ensuring extremely high bond reliability.

Key Advantages and Features:
  • Process Simple: Only a single coat is required for most applications, eliminating the need for a primer. This simplifies the process, reduces labor time, solvent usage, inventory, and shipping costs. It can also be used as a covercoat in two-coat systems for strong adaptability.
  • Wide Compatibility: Offers excellent adhesion to a wide variety of common industrial elastomers, adapts to different compound formulations, and provides superior adhesion to plated metal surfaces, effectively reducing production scrap rates.
  • Strong Environmental Resistance: The cured bond resists harsh service environments including high temperature, salt spray, oil, chemicals, and solvents, meeting the needs of complex working conditions.
  • Easy Application: Can be applied by brush, dip, spray, roll coat, or other uniform coating methods. Recommended dry film thickness is 17.8-30.5 μm (one-coat) or 15.2-20.3 μm (covercoat over primer), making operation simple and accessible.
  • Environmental Compliance: Contains no chlorinated solvents or lead salts; waste solvent is suitable for incineration, complies with mainstream environmental regulations, and meets green production requirements.
Typical Application Areas (based on real industrial scenarios):
  • Automotive Industry: Used for heat cure bonding of metal-rubber composite parts such as engine mounts, shock absorbers, suspension bushings, transmission seals, and door weather strips, ensuring vehicle driving stability and sealing performance.
  • Industrial Equipment: Applied for bonding elastomers to metal frameworks in conveyor roller coverings, pump and valve seals, industrial dampers, and pipe flange gaskets, improving equipment durability and reliability.
  • Electronics & Electrical: Used for vulcanization bonding of rubber seals to metal shells of cable connectors, electrical equipment damper feet, and waterproof seals, ensuring long-term stability of insulation and protection performance.
  • Rail Transit & Aerospace: Applied for metal-elastomer bonding in rail vehicle dampers and aircraft sealing/buffer components, meeting strict standards for high reliability and extreme environment resistance.
Application Process:

Substrate surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned first: remove grease by solvent degreasing or alkaline cleaning, remove rust and oxide layers by chemical treatments (phosphating for steel, conversion coating for aluminum) or mechanical methods (grit blasting with steel grit for ferrous metals, aluminum oxide for non-ferrous metals, grinding, wire brushing, etc.). Stir the adhesive fully before application to ensure uniform composition, dilute with suitable solvent if needed per process requirements. After application, air dry for 20-40 minutes at room temperature, or use low-temperature (max 65°C) high-airflow drying to shorten time. Ideally, coated parts should be molded the same day; if storage is necessary, avoid contamination and high humidity, with a maximum shelf life of 1 year (unopened original package, stored at 21-27°C in a ventilated area). The vulcanization process should follow the parameters recommended by the corresponding elastomer manufacturer, with curing occurring simultaneously with rubber vulcanization.

With its wide compatibility, stable bonding quality, and eco-friendly features, LORD Chemlok 6150GB continues to provide efficient and reliable elastomer-to-metal heat cure bonding solutions for manufacturing industries worldwide.
