3. Processing and Curing Guidelines

Araldite CW 1302 Resin contains fillers which tend to settle over time. It is therefore necessary to carefully homogenize the complete contents of the container before use. To prevent filler separation and inconsistent metering, the components should be gently stirred from time to time while they are present in production equipment storage tanks.

To facilitate stirring and handling, the highly filled component should be heated to 40–50°C in its original container (e.g., overnight in an oven) before adding the hardener.

After thorough mixing, the mixed material should be degassed under a 5–10 mbar vacuum to yield quality casting.

In a manufacturing environment, uncured impregnated parts will pick up moisture. Therefore, it is critical to fully cure the parts right after impregnation or immediately store uncured impregnated parts in a moisture-controlled area. To determine whether crosslinking has been carried to completion and final properties are optimal, relevant measurements should be carried out on the actual part or the glass transition temperature of the cured system should be measured.

Suggested curing process: 24 hours at room temperature (about 25°C) plus 6 hours at 60°C to yield parts with low shrinkage and best surface aspect.
Minimum curing condition: 48 hours at 25°C.

4. Typical Applications
  • Transformers

  • Filters

  • Capacitors

  • Electrical devices used in potentially explosive environments

  • Suitable for casting or vacuum casting processes

5. FAQ

Q1: What is the mixing ratio?
By weight, resin:hardener = 100:11. By volume, resin:hardener = 100:19.

Q2: Can the system cure at room temperature?
Yes. The suggested process is 24 hours at 25°C plus 6 hours at 60°C. The minimum curing condition can be 48 hours at 25°C.

Q3: Why should the resin be preheated before processing?
The resin is a highly filled system. Heating to 40–50°C reduces viscosity and facilitates stirring and handling. The resin component should be heated before adding the hardener.

Q4: Is degassing required after mixing?
After thorough mixing, degassing under a 5–10 mbar vacuum is recommended to obtain quality castings.

Q5: What are the main applications?
Transformers, filters, capacitors, and electrical devices used in potentially explosive environments; suitable for casting or vacuum casting.

Q6: How should the product be stored and what is the shelf life?
Both resin and hardener should be stored sealed in original containers, in a dry place, at 2–40°C, away from direct sunlight. Shelf life is 1.5 years for the resin and 3 years for the hardener from date of manufacture. The hardener is moisture-sensitive; partially used containers should be closed immediately, and a desiccant venting device is highly recommended. The resin should not be stored for long periods above 40°C nor exposed to temperatures above 100°C for more than 2 hours. The hardener should not be stored at elevated temperatures (>80°C) for extended periods.
